Broadening their potential career opportunities and learning about different jobs, 17 students job shadowed at different local businesses.
The job shadowing program allows Business Leaders of Tomorrow members who attend meetings and participate in events to follow professionals in the Amarillo area in their daily lives for one day.
Issac Reyes followed Deputy Sheriff Officer Stan McNut for a day at the Randall County Sheriff’s department.
“I got to see a bunch of things that I’m sure most people don’t see,” Reyes said. “One thing that I didn’t expect is that they did a lot of paperwork. We got to help people who were stuck in the snow and direct traffic, and they showed me around the Randall County office. It was a good experience, one that not many people have. It’s given me a better idea if I’d want to be a cop or not.”
Freshman Toby Stroud learned from a woman who owns a trucking company in Amarillo.
“I shadowed Jane Gripp, who owns Plains Transportation in Amarillo,” Stroud said. “She owns a company with over 145 trucks. We sorted through the mail and dealt with truck drivers. It was fun– a lot of fun. This experience assured me that this is the career for me.”
BLT sponsor Marcie Cook coordinated the job shadowing opportunities for the club.
