“Volunteering at the Amarillo Zoo was a different and unique experience,” freshman Alyssa Harris said. “I originally got into this work to be closer with animals, and I thought it would be a good thing to have on a resume for college, especially since this is what I want to pursue. They started me off working around a bunch of people and learning about smaller animals. Doing that job, you are still getting the zoo experience but without working with the larger animals. The more time you spend at the zoo, the more time you get to spend with the keepers. Every day is different and that is one thing I love about the zoo. You never know exactly what you will be doing and it really just depends on how many people are there and what needs doing. I have very helpful and supportive parents. Honestly, if they were any less involved, I wouldn’t be able to do this. They tow me around everywhere and my mom is very organized about looking out for me. Without their help, I would not be able to do the things that I enjoy.”
