Erica Perez & Briann Schenk
“Winter guard is an indoor color guard show that is, in our case, performed to the tunes of a Broadway musical called ‘Newsies,'” sophomore Erica Perez said. “We have a rifle line in our show this year which five of us are in, and then there is also a flag line. The show is very upbeat and fast paced with a short ballad in the middle. The winter guard is instructed by Michelle Sheffield, who is the wife of Mr. Sheffield.”
“The hours of winter guard are quite long,” sophomore Briann Schenk said. “On Thursdays we practice from 7 to 9. We also rehearse on the weekends. The hours of that are 3 to 6 or 2 to 5. Most of the girls on winter guard come to rehearsal from other extracurricular activities with less than an hour break. By the time we are finished, we have usually done five hours of practice in all.”
“Winter guard is a fantastic experience,” Perez said. “By participating in something that we all enjoy, we’ve grown a lot closer as a family and learned a lot of new skills for color guard.”
