Senior Treet Allison competes in a distance race at a March track meet.

Five runners from the boys track team will compete at the Texas Relays in Austin beginning today, April 1.

The Texas Relays is a competitive track and field meet which features only runners, throwers and jumpers who have the top submitted times or distances. In each event, only a certain number of athletes qualify from submitted statistics. Dependent on the event, a preliminary event may be held to qualify for the final race. Running in two races, senior Norman Grimes will compete in the 300 hurdles Friday evening and the 110 meter hurdles Saturday afternoon.

“I’m excited to race at the Texas Relays,” Grimes said. “The relays are a mecca for Texas’s fastest. I’m looking forward to the competition and fast times.”

Senior Treet Allison will compete in the 1600 meter run Friday evening and run again Saturday with his team.

It’s the biggest stage the distance guys going have performed on.

“It’s exciting to know I will be competing with some of the best in the nation,” Allison said. “There is some pressure from the fact that it’s my last chance to show what I’ve been working for. I plan on breaking 4:20. I’ve been training in that range for a long time.”

Allison said racing against the best of the best in Texas will make placing a challenge.

“I will still put myself on the line,” Allison said. “Or at least a little past it.”

Seniors Bailey Bach, Amory Hogan and junior Dylan Knight will join Allison for the preliminary race for the 4 x 800 meter relay Saturday morning with the goal of qualifying for the final run.

“I’ve been wanting to experience the Texas Relays since freshman year, and it is a huge deal to me to be going,” Knight said. “I’m glad to be going with my team members Treet, Amory, Bailey and Norman. It’s the biggest stage the distance guys going have performed on, so it is going to be a new experience.”
