Band to raise funds with annual March-A-Thon Aug. 20
Beginning Aug. 1, band members have practiced playing and marching daily in preparation for the upcoming performance season.
The residents of Canyon may find themselves serenaded with “Uptown Funk” as they roll out of bed Saturday morning, Aug. 20.
The band will play stand tunes and the Fight Song during their annual March-A-Thon tomorrow. The 10-mile march to prepare for performances and raise money starts at 7 a.m and will take the band along a path through Canyon neighborhoods and finishes at the high school.
It’s a chance for the community to sponsor us.

“The March-A-Thon is a chance for the students to bond in the face of a daunting task,” head band director Mike Sheffield said. “It helps us work out some coordination with some of the students who haven’t marched much, and it’s a good fundraiser. It’s a chance for the community to sponsor us per mile or per student for getting out there and doing something that is especially difficult.”
Junior Keevan Wood, who will participate in his third March-A-Thon, said March-A-Thon bonds the band together.
“It puts us through an event where we all feel the same,” Wood said. “You all go through one thing, and you can call the person next to you a brother, and you can depend on them. You can help them out, and they can help you.”
A bucket for community donations will follow the group during the march.
“It does great things for us,” Sheffield said. “It’s exhausting. It’s difficult. But Canyon supports us and takes care of us, and it’s very worthwhile.”
