Hello! My name is Nicole Butcher. I am a senior, and this is my first year on staff. I'm really excited to be here and have the opportunity to work with the awesome people on our staff. Outside of The Eagle's Tale, I am involved with drama, art and (probably too many) dual credit classes. When I'm not in the journalism room, it's fair to say you'll find me either in art, theater or somewhere else with my nose buried firmly in my sketchbook. Outside of school, I enjoy photography, especially portraits and rustic architecture, true crime podcasts and mystery novels. I also heavily enjoy ink illustration and traditional animation, the latter of which I am planning on studying in college. I am really excited to channel my creative energy into this newspaper, so thank you for supporting us and happy reading!

Although the choir department could not host an indoor concert this year, members of the ovation choir, as well as students who auditioned, performed in Java and Jams Saturday, Jan. 31. The event was hosted in the breezeway. Several student musicians and bands performed, with a Palace Coffee drink cart available to attendees to complete the atmosphere. From the smooth vocals of senior Kat Clark and her band giving life to the show while she sings the lyrics of “Valerie” by Amy WInehouse, to assistant choir director Reece Kingcade jamming out in his own world while rocking to “Renegade” by Styx, read on to explore Java and Jams.

Seniors Reid Rousser and Raylee Bain show off their cattle during the steer portion of the Randall County Junior Livestock Show Monday, Jan. 18. Rousser has shown steer for over a year and said the county show is more laid back than other shows. “You want to catch the eye of the judge to make sure he gets a good look at your calf, and you need to be very presentable,” Rousser said. “The end goal is to be at the top of your class. Your calf needs to be smooth on the walk. He needs to look good from his profile and from the back.”

Alongside Canyon High Robotics Club sponsor Bill Troyer, team members sophomores Cannon Rosser, Rhett Patterson, Tyler Troyer and Brandon White attend a virtual meeting over Zoom with UIL Robotics State judges. After weeks of waiting for results from UIL, the rankings were announced, with the team placing 14th of 24.

According to the CDC, the U.S. currently has 13,447,627 total COVID-19 cases, and 267,302 deaths have been reported. According to the Amarillo Public Health Department, there are 7,592 active cases of the virus in the Potter and Randall counties, with 327 deaths. A count was taken in four anonymous classes at Canyon High, with 52.4% of students wearing the face covering properly and 45.8% of students wearing their mask incorrectly. With the coronavirus being more wide-spread than ever, this begs the question: Why are we becoming COVID-19 lazy?

The Texas Art Education Association’s Art in the Park chalk competition attracted 50 Canyon students competing as individuals, duos and trios on Saturday, Oct. 17. Taking home the Peoples Choice Award and a $100 cash prize for their work; duo team, sophomores Raylee Fernandez and Taryn Gullick, paint their abstract, award winning entry.

Drama Club meets in the auditorium after school on Thursdays. “We try to get involved with the community, so we try to pick up some service projects, club sponsor Kylie Howell said. It’s been really neat to watch Drama Club members mentor younger students and put into practice what they’ve learned to teach little kids about theatre, music, and dance.”

The districts attendance policy was originally changed because of concerns with COVID-19. The revisions alter last years policy where students with a 90 or above grade average in all classes with three or less absences were exempt from final exams.

Canyon High band director Eric Rath transitioned to the high school after spending six years directing the Junior High band. Rath majored in music at WTAMU. “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do since the seventh grade,” Rath said. In addition to being a director, Rath composes original pieces and arranges music for marching band shows.
