The girls basketball team will play their second playoff game tonight at the Rip Griffin center in Lubbock as the home team against Andrews at 6 p.m.

The girls finished the district season 8-0 with a win over Hereford as undefeated district champions. The girls had a competitive pre-season playing the number one ranked teams in the state from 1A, 2A, 3A, and some of the better 5A teams in the state, for a total record of 24-6. The team won their first playoff game Tuesday night against Dalhart 70-30.

“We had one our best offensive games of the year,” senior Ryan Patterson said.

Focusing on the team that we play next is the day to day goal, and just working on them specifically because every approach to a new team is different.”

“Going forward though on defense we are definitely going to be working on screening.”

On Monday night, the Dalhart Wolves played a zone defense on the Lady Eagles.

“We’ve just worked really hard in practice on finding open looks, and knowing when to pass the ball,” Caitlynne Speegle said. “So we took advantage of the defense Dalhart gave us whenever they weren’t in the right spots.”

Most of the teams the Lady Eagles have played this year run a zone defense against head coach Joe Lombard’s offense.

“A lot of teams have played the same defense against us this year, so we are hoping they will play a man,” Speegle said.

The Andrews Lady Mustangs district record is 6-2, and their overall record is 10-22. Patterson said they are looking out for Andrews’ six foot guard.

At this point in the season we are really coming together as a team, and we have gelled together nicely”

“If a team has a good player from here on out we really need to shut that player down,” Speegle said. “We will have to be able to help off. Focusing on the team that we play next is the day to day goal, and just working on them specifically because every approach to a new team is different.”

The Lady Eagles team ‘theme’ this season has been “C Us Rise.”

“At this point in the season we are really coming together as a team, and we have gelled together nicely,” Patterson said. “Each person is really embracing the thing they do and doing it to the best of their ability.”

Coach Lombard stresses to the team to be at the very peak of their season by the last game.

“Our goal is to be as close to perfect by the last game,” Speegle said. “At this point it’s not about doing new things every day, but about perfecting everything we can to be the very best.”
