Baseball coaches Ernest Trejo, Jared Peddy, John Doan and Wade Williams celebrate Doan’s 400th win.

Varsity baseball will play the Plainview Bulldogs at home April 28 after Coach Doan led the baseball team to his 400th win April 5. The team’s season thus far is 20 wins with nine losses. The team has 11 wins and two losses in district play.

“It used to be a lot about wins and losses,” Doan said. “It’s moved from wins and losses to making a difference in kids’ lives and people that I come into contact with each day. It’s really about the relationships with your players.”

— Coach John Doan

Coach Doan has coached at Canyon for 15 years, and began his education career in Dalhart in 1995.

“It took a lot of teams to get to that 400th win,” senior Austin Moya said. “It was pretty special being a part of the 400th game.”

Players celebrated Doan’s achievement and the opportunity to contribute to the team.

“It’s awesome to represent Canyon and play a game that you like, but also represent your school and your town as well,” senior Gunnar Palacios said.

Doan said some people talk about challenges as if they are a negative thing, but he does not share that view.

“Living in Canyon and with the community expectations that we have here on the sports end of things, everything’s important, and it’s fun to be a part of that,” Doan said. “I don’t know if there are challenges necessarily. There’s a little hurdle every now and then, but being around the people I’m around every day and working with the kids I work with every day is a special thing.”
