Varsity football to play in district championship

Canyon defenders take down the Caprock offense.

The varsity football team will take on the Randall Raiders Nov. 7 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium for the district championship.

The Eagles and the Raiders will both advance to the playoffs regardless of the outcome of Friday’s game, but the winner will be crowned district champion. Both teams are undefeated in district so far with Canyon most recently defeating Caprock Oct. 30 for Canyon’s senior night.

“I talked to a few of my teammates before the game, and we all agreed that we didn’t think that night would ever come,” senior guard Brayden Cook said. “It was cool to see the brothers that stuck it out and made it to their senior year. I wouldn’t want to be with another group of guys.”

The Eagles finished the first half ahead by one touchdown and ended the game ahead by one touchdown with a final score of 49-41.

“Every team we play, we know we will get their best game,” Cook said. “Our team answered well to a very motivated Caprock team. It may not always look pretty, but in the end we got the win.”

Cook said he has seen improvement throughout the season and predicts that the team will have a successful playoff run.

“This season has shown a lot of success for our team,” Cook said. “Texas high school football playoffs is an exciting time. I cannot wait for the road ahead for this football team.”

The road ahead does not depend on Friday’s game, but the rivalry between Canyon and Randall will come to a head in what is expected to be an intense competition.

“It’s going to be a battle,” senior linebacker Derius Jones said. “We need to focus on the goal and work to attain it.”
