Golf teams place in first tournament

The boys golf team placed third at the Hereford Invitational Tournament, Sept. 11 and 12.

The golf teams started off their fall season at the Hereford Invitational, Sept. 11 and 12 at the John Pitman Municipal golf course.

The girls team placed fourth in the tournament with sophomore Macy Mitchell and junior Hannah Delong placing in the top 10. The boys team placed third at the tournament. Senior Max Mitchell and senior Andrew Brewer placed in the top 10. Both teams had players scoring their personal best.

“I could have played better,” Max Mitchell said. “I struck the ball well on both days, yet I didn’t score as well as I would have liked to.”

On Friday, the tournament had two rains delays, adding up to three hours of waiting for the rain to pass. Freshman Brianna Martinez experienced her first tournament in the inclement weather.

I think we will get a better understanding that this isn’t a game of perfection.

“I will always remember my first tournament because of the rain delays we had that day,” Martinez said.

Team members played on, despite the rainy weather on Friday.

“We did not like all the weather, but we played well,” boys golf coach Johnny Hampton said. “Overall, as a team, we could have played better. We still had some good scores though.”

Delong said she hopes the girls team will improve this season as they increase their knowledge on the sport.

“We should get better as everyone gets a better feel for the game and how we can’t focus on every bad shot we hit,” Delong said. “I think we will get a better understanding that this isn’t a game of perfection.”

Both girls coach Angela Land and boys coach Johnny Hampton said they expect their teams to win district so they can travel to regionals.
