Lady Eagles to advance to round two of playoffs

The Lady Eagle basketball team traveled to Lubbock Cooper High School Tuesday, Feb. 17, to play Abilene Cooper for the first round of the playoffs. Canyon won 64-30, and will travel Feb 20 to play El Paso Bel Air for round two.

Canyon finished the district season 9-1 and was named co-district champion with Hereford. Canyon was named bi-district champion following the win against Abilene Cooper. The upcoming game against El Paso Bel Air will determine the area champion. The winner of Friday’s game will move on to the regional quarterfinals. Senior Brianne McDowell said the win over Cooper was a great start to the playoffs.

“We came together and played well as a team,” McDowell said. “It’s exactly what we needed going into the playoff run.”

McDowell said a contributing factor in the win was the team’s attitude on the bench, and the game was a complete team effort.

“Everyone contributed on the court and brought energy on the bench when they were out,” McDowell said.

Senior Savannah Bartlett said the team is already focused on the upcoming round.

“We celebrated after, but we are ready to move on to the next one,” Bartlett said. “We aren’t finished yet.”
