Varsity football corrals the Herd in homecoming victory

The varsity football team defeated Hereford Friday night 42-19 in front of a packed Kimbrough Stadium for the annual homecoming game.

The Eagles took the lead quickly with a touchdown by senior Graeson Cook. After an interception by senior Clay Erwin, Cook scored again advancing the lead to 14-0.

Hereford made it to the scoreboard during the second quarter with a field goal, followed by a Canyon turnover resulting in another field goal.

Canyon advanced their lead 21-6 after yet another Cook touchdown. The Eagles led Hereford 28-6 after an interception ran back for a touchdown by junior Autry Dowd.

Senior running back Hunter Burrell scored at the beginning of second half, making the score 35-6.

After a punt return for a touchdown by the Herd, sophomore Cade McCallie had his second muffed kickoff for the night, giving the ball back to Hereford. The Herd scored their final points for the night with 3:24 left in the third quarter, making the score 35-19.

The Eagles finished the game with a final touchdown by Cook and interception by Dowd, finalizing the score at 42-19.

“It was the senior’s last homecoming so we wanted it to go really well,” Cook said. “Everyone played awesome and we got a win.”

Canyon does not have a game scheduled for this week and will face off against Monahans in Lubbock Cooper Oct. 5 at 7:30.

“This will be the first time in Canyon’s history that we will play Monahans,” Cook said. “We are really excited to play someone new and get ready before district starts.”
