Associate principal Jennifer Boren will assume the role of Canyon High School principal beginning June 2018.

Boren, with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Baylor University and a master’s degree in education from Wayland Baptist University, brought years of teaching experience to her job at Canyon High, where she began working in 2008 as a math teacher and became associate principal in 2015. Boren replaces retiring principal Tim Gilliland.

“I cannot wait to get started,” Boren said. “Mr. Gilliland is leaving Canyon High School in phenomenal shape. We have excellent programs, national titles, state titles, so we don’t need an overhaul at Canyon High. But I’m going to be considering how sometimes good is the enemy of great and what things we might look at to become even more awesome.”

Boren was selected from a pool of 17 applicants after a preliminary interview with a committee of teachers, parents and administrators and two secondary interviews with Superintendent Dr. Darryl Flusche, Assistant Superintendents Robyn Cranmer, Cameron Rosser and Heather Wilson and Director of Secondary Education Marc Hamil.

I think Canyon ISD hit a homerun with this hire.”

“Jennifer Boren is a professional, a thinker, a person who wants to continue to grow leaders on the campus and someone who’s going to lead Canyon High School to even greater things based on the solid foundations that are there,” Flusche said. “She also has a big-picture view of what we need for our future graduates as far as their opportunities and how they can be prepared for their advanced futures.”

Gilliland will retire in June 2018 after working as principal since 2008.

“Mr. Gilliland and I started at the same time at Canyon High School,” Boren said. “He’s been phenomenal in every way and constantly growing, constantly improving, constantly mentoring me. I am just blessed to have worked with him for 10 years, and hope to follow well in his footsteps.”

Gilliland said he believes he is leaving the school in capable hands.

“I think Canyon ISD hit a homerun with this hire,” Gilliland said. “Jennifer Boren was the perfect person to take the reins at Canyon High. She’s going to do a fantastic job, and I’m really excited about the future of Canyon High School.”
