Thirty-four band members will compete tomorrow, Dec. 4, at pre-area auditions in Amarillo for a chance to advance to area auditions Jan. 10 in Abilene.

Those band members competing earned spots in the All-Region Band at the UIL All-Region contest Nov. 11 at Amarillo High School. Out of the 74 members who participated, 51 students qualified for the symphonic or concert band.

“I practice a lot,” senior percussionist Landon Work said. “I come after school and during activity period. The timpani etudes for percussionists are usually under-prepared for all of us because there are only two sets, so we’re all usually fighting over them to practice.”

Work said band members work hard to achieve spots in these honor bands.

“We had some extra time to prepare because marching season came to an end a little earlier,” Work said. “It was good for us because we exceeded our goal of 50 people making the all-region band.”
