A banner in the commons invites students to attend the benefit concert Friday night.

The choir department will present a throwback themed concert 6:30 p.m. April 1 in the commons. All proceeds from the concert will go to the family of freshman J.D. Cook, who is undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.

The show will feature student-performed songs from the 1950s to the 1980s as well as several skits, a themed photo booth and refreshments including popcorn and soft drinks. Admission to the concert is free but donations will be accepted at the door.

“I am looking forward to seeing the the people in our community coming together to support one of our choir members fight cancer,” choir co-president Justin Johnson said. “If there is ever someone in need, our choir family will help pick that person up.”

The choir officers selected the theme of “Flashback Friday.” Johnson said he hopes the theme will appeal to audience members of all ages.

People will hear anything from Frank Sinatra to Lynyrd Skynyrd and songs like ‘Down to the River’ and ‘Brown Eyed Girl.’

“Almost everyone can relate to the ‘throwback’ songs, young and old,” Johnson said. “People will hear anything from Frank Sinatra to Lynyrd Skynyrd and songs like ‘Down to the River’ and ‘Brown Eyed Girl.’ The students have put a lot of hard work into to making this Flashback Friday really feel like a blast from the past.”

Choir co-president Kayla Finke said planning the benefit concert has been a good experience that shows the spirit of the Canyon choir.

“We are in the middle of contest season with difficult music to learn, but the members of choir want to support J.D.,” Finke said. “As a choir family we want to do as much as we can to show our love and support.”
