Members of Student Council hold up the awards they received in the mail from the Texas Association of Student Councils.

The student council was recognized May 1 by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) and received five awards for their service to the school and community.

The student council received awards for their Drug, Alcohol Safety and Health Education (D.A.S.H.) program, Energy and Environment program, Pride and Patriotism, and Community Service. They also received the TASC Outstanding Student Council Award.

“TASC presents the award to student councils that are actively serving their school and community,” senior Trevor Glenn said.

Student council participated in the canned food drive, organized the garage sale to raise money to help science teacher Kelly Dressler with her ongoing battle with cancer, and helped benefit organizations such as United Way and Relay for Life.

“The service projects make us feel good because we get to help out the community in a way not a lot of other people do,” junior Justin Johnson said.

The most prestigious award, the Outstanding Student Council Award, is awarded to student councils for their efforts in service projects. Each activity in which they participate, the amount of money raised and the number of items received are documented and a certain number of points are earned in specific criteria.

“The officers who ran committees had to fill out packets and, in some packets, you had to have a certain number points to be eligible for the Outstanding Student Council Award,” junior Scott Cornelius said.

The award distinguishes student councils and gives them added credibility when a student council runs for a district office seat.

“This is the first time Canyon High School has won the award,” senior Preston Noel said. “The senior class officers are glad we won it, and we’re happy to have something to leave behind.”
