The National Honor Society welcomed 70 new members into the organization Thursday Nov. 10 at the annual inductee banquet.
57 returning members attended the banquet and presented a slide show showing their individual high school accomplishments.
All NHS members must meet the following requirements:
• Must be a junior or senior
• Have a GPA of 91.5 or higher,
• Completed at least two Pre-AP, AP or Duel Credit courses prior to induction year
All members are analyzed and voted upon by the NHS faculty council, consisting of five teachers that change annually, based on how each student fits and executes the requirements.
“Membership in NHS is a reflection of a well-rounded person,” NHS advisor Mrs. Freeman said. “It’s not just about academic success. It’s also about character traits, such as honesty and dependability, and how one relates to others through leadership and service. Membership, although a privilege, carries with it an obligation to continue to be an excellent role model at all times.”

Girls cross country coach Ray Baca was selected by the University Interscholastic League staff as a National Federation Coaches Association State Coach of the Year.

“When I was called and told I was selected as Coach of the Year for Texas, I was very flattered and humbled,” Baca said. “The UIL selects this award and nominates our state’s coaches for sectional awards. So, to have them select me was an unexplainable feeling.”

Baca is automatically nominated for sectional coach of the year and will be considered along other coaches for the honor. States included along with Texas competing for sectional honors are Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma. Sectional winners will be nominated for national coach of the year.

Check back to The Eagle’s Tale for more information and results of the sectional and national nominations.

Moammar Gadhafi, the man who held power over Libya with corruption and tyranny for 42 years, has finally been eliminated. The citizens of Libya rose up and fought a long and costly revolution. For almost a year some Libyans have dropped their jobs and joined the rebellion to rid their country of the unjust leader. Gadhafi led many vicious assaults upon his own people. Events such as firing upon civilians with anti-air guns and shooting worshipers near mosques stunned the world.

He was captured by rebellious forces on Oct. 20 in his hometown of Sirte. Contradicting stories of the circumstance of his death include at least two theories. In the first, Gadhafi was wounded by a NATO air strike then taken by the rebels and died from his wounds. According to officials the more likely story is that he was captured by the rebels and executed.

Not many high school seniors have the bragging rights of fighting in a World Cup, but MorgAnne Thompson does.

MorgAnne returned home on Oct. 15, after fighting in her first Wushu World Cup competition. Despite her loss to a silver medalist from the Philippines who was at least nine years older than her, she said she still enjoyed the experience.

“The best part of it was seeing all the nations,” MorgAnne said. “In the opening ceremony, all the nations walked in together and it was the coolest thing to see that you were one of the 88 countries that were there.”

While traveling and fighting in the World Cup, MorgAnne created friendships with the other USA fighters.

“I got to know the USA team members a lot better,” MorgAnne said. “And I am hoping to gain friendships over time.”

Most of the fighters were 26 years old, the prime age for sanshou fighting.

“Our best fighter from the US has been traveling and doing sanshou for eight years,” MorgAnne said. “I’ve got to gain more experience. It takes time.”

MorgAnne plans to fight in more competitions such as the Pan-American Games in July, and the Olympics.

“I know what the best of the best are like and what my competition is like,” MorgAnne said. “Now I have goals I can reach and things I can do.”

Those with complaints about temperatures in the school will just have put on (or take off) their big kid jackets and deal with it, as CISD now sets air conditioning and heating levels within the school.
State-mandated budget cuts resulted in the district reducing the percentage of funds being spent on utilities such as air conditioning and heating by taking control of building air conditioning and setting a certain temperature to be maintained throughout every room.
A state law that took effect this school year requires all Texas schools to reduce electrical consumption by five percent as a result of the $4 billion budget cut in education funds for the state. For CISD, that meant $3.3 million had to be cut from the 2011-2012 budget. That cut required Assistant Superintendent Randy McDowell to create a new energy management system.
“We had to update and establish guidelines that created a system that we could afford,” McDowell said.
With air conditioning and heating, less energy use equals a cheaper bill. The school board approved the recommendation of regulating a set temperature for every classroom in school buildings. Superintendent Mike Wartes and McDowell collected data from other school districts statewide that aided them in determining the most reasonable and effective temperature for CISD buildings to use.
“Seventy-three degrees is our set temperature based on temperatures and systems used by other schools in the state,” Wartes said. “Sixty-eight degrees will be the set temp for the winter months.”
Experts say that every degree represents a five percent savings, which for CISD, means that every two degrees saved shaves $60,000 off of the annual $2 million spent on utilities. Regulating and reducing heating and cooling costs brings the district closer to achieving its goal of reducing that annual amount by $200,000.
“Our goal is to be as efficient, when it comes to savings, as we can while still keeping everything reasonable,” Wartes said.
Wartes advises students to come prepared.
“I would tell students to watch the weather report and dress accordingly,” Wartes said. “If it’s going to be a really hot day, dress in lighter and cooler clothing, and if it’s a cold day dress warmly.”
Wartes said that despite struggles with the budget, the district continues to provide a quality educational environment.
“Even though we have had to make cuts, our goal has always been to protect the classroom, Wartes said. “We feel that with our new savings policies we have achieved that.”

After 26 choir students earned chairs at All-District auditions at Pampa High School Oct. 1, they will prepare for All-Region Choir auditions Nov. 5 in Dumas.

Competitors sang cuts from three pieces of music to audition for All-District. Students who earned All-District chairs will perform three more pieces of music for All-Region auditions, in addition to a sight-reading audition.

“Canyon represented very well at All-District,” assistant choir director Kelli Harter said, who is new to the faculty this year.

Senior Hayden Williams earned sixth chair in Bass 2 and will advance to All-Region auditions.

“I’m going to practice three hours a day,” Williams said. “I’m proud of everyone else.”

Four Canyon students earned first chair in their respective sections: seniors Jenci Jones in Soprano 1, Hannah Forman in Soprano 2, Chandess Yerby in Alto 1 and Trey Glenn in Tenor 2.

“We probably had the best district results that we’ve ever had here at Canyon,” choir director Brandon Farren said. “We placed 26 out of 30, which is the highest percentage of any school that auditioned. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students.”

The latest classroom gossip that is putting students, especially juniors, into a tizzy is the rumor that senior permits will no longer be available at Canyon High next year. Superintendent Wartes and Principal Gilliland have confirmed that this rumor is false.
”Without hiring several extra non-core teachers we don’t have enough sections for all of the students without the use of free periods,” Gilliland said.
Full time students are required to attend at least five class periods and receive 240 minutes of instruction per day. If free periods do not infringe on those state requirements then they will not be removed, but will continue to be restricted.
“We do limit seniors to one of these periods, unless circumstances dictate otherwise,” Gilliland said.
Approval to distribute free periods must be given by Principal Gilliland.
“The campus administration will have to determine whether or not to allow an individual these types of permits based on a student’s schedule,” Superintendent Wartes said.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the courses Canyon High has to offer in order to adhere to state requirements.
“As always we encourage our students to be involved in clubs, organizations, and classes that will develop them for college or a career,” Superintendent Wartes said.
